CONFEDERATE SCOUT'S MAP
Rare, fine content captured Confederate scout's map, 1p. 4to., [June, 1862], showing in great detail Union troop disposition in and around Fort Macomb and Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana. The map bears notes such as: "…1 co. cavalry 21 mi. from Ponchatoula…1 co. cavalry 8 mi. from Port Henry 80 men under Capt. Slocum…2 regmts with 1,200 men …600 men and battery 1 1/2 mi. above…T. C. Rhoads cavalry & 80 men mile & 1/2 above Ferry in cane field…Sawmill 4 pickets from Rhoads cavalry taken here…" and so on. At bottom are extensive notes reading in part: "…Ferry boat kept on west side of the river - picket from Rhoads cavalry of 4 men at the ferry in a little covering on the upper side of the road. At Whiskey Island…are 2 brass pieces and two hundred men…from ferry 200 yards east road built up in swamp, then high and dry to Ponchatoula…Government brings much sugar from Amite to Tickfaw..." Near fine condition, matted. From the papers of Capt. O. W. Lull of the 8th New Hampshire, whose forces occupied the fort in early 1862. His notes indicate that his map was captured on the person of Confederate Major A. W. Walker on June 19, 1862, at about the time the fort was captured. Hand-drawn Civil War maps are not common, Confederate scout's maps are rare!
