Description:

CONFEDERATE "SAVANNAH REPUBLICAN" REPORTS ON SHERMAN, EARLY, MOSBY AND MORE
Good pair of late Civil War-date Confederate newspapers, both rather crudely printed on cheap paper and both published after the capture of the city of Savannah, Georgia by Union force under Gen. William T. Sherman, includes: the Jan. 14, 1865 edition of the "Savannah Republican". 4pp. folio, containing reports on the state of the conflict against the Union, including Gen. Jubal Early''s retreats in West Virginia, a result of insufficient supplies and reinforcements. It also quotes intercepted correspondence between Union general Benjamin Butler and Admiral David D. Porter, and lists criticisms of general Edmund Kirby Smith''s command of the Trans-Mississippi Department of the Confederacy. Shows folds, with the front page neatly split, else very good. WITH: the Jan. 17, 1865 edition of the "Savannah Republican", 4pp. folio, containing reports on Confederate cavalry raider John S. Mosby''s escape from Union forces in Virginia after being shot and wounded in December, as well as Gen. Sherman''s invasion of South Carolina following his capture of Savannah. Both papers also contain local news, including ship arrivals and articles on charity benefits arranged by northern citizens, and both contain several interesting advertisements, including one for a minstrel show featuring "Original Burlesque Nigger Delineators". Both show folds, with the earlier edition showing a full horizontal split to the front page, and with the later edition showing some paper loss above the masthead, else very good. Two pieces.
