CONFEDERATE P.O.W. LETTER
Good content A.L.S. by Lt. Col. John Maury 1p. 4to., Fort Delaware, May 9, 1865 to his cousin in Baltimore. Captured at Fort Harrison in September 1864, he had been imprisoned at Fort Delaware since October 1864. Writing about a month following Lee's surrender at Appomattox, in part: "...I hope and trust we will all soon be out of here now, for imprisonment is more irksome than ever, now it seems all is gone, and no good end can be gained by our remaining here. However I don't know what my luck will be about getting out, for I am one of the few who have not yet signified a willingness to take the oath of allegiance, but it is only a question of time, and the day will soon come when it will be proper for all to take it, but I do not think it has come yet....I have heard little or nothing from home since Richmond has been occupied... I don't know what I shall do when I get free for a livelihood - think I shall have to go off somewhere where land and cattle are cheap and settle down for a farmer. You know a farm is a sailor's idea of celestial bliss...". Prior to the war, Maury served in the U.S. Navy from 1848 to 1856 as an engineer. Offered with the original transmittal envelope. Usual folds, else fine condition.
