Description:

CONFEDERATE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE
Scarce partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Monocacy Junction, Md., Apr. 15, 1865, an Oath of Allegiance issued to Joseph S. House who swears that he will "forever oppose secession, rebellion, and the disruption or severance of the Union...". House signs at bottom. The verso bears a printed pass allowing House to pass through the lines for up to ten days, with the pass twice extended, up to May 31, 1865. Split at one fold and soiled, as one would expect from a pass carried folded by the soldier for weeks, yet still entirely presentable.
