Description:

CONFEDERATE NAVY DOCUMENT
Rare war-date Confederate Navy Bureau letter, 1p. 4to., written by Commander JOHN K. MITCHELL, C. S. Navy Department, on "Office of Orders and Detail" letterhead, Richmond, Va., January 4, 1864 to Lt. Comdr. John Rutledge, in part: "Agreeable to the recommendation of a Medical Board...leave of absence is hereby granted to you for one (1) month, at the expiration of which you will resume command of the steamer 'Palmetto State'...". Signed twice by Flag Officer JOHN R. TUCKER (1812-1883), once on the upper left margin as forwarded with rank and on the verso where he acknowledges Rutledge's return to duty on Feb. 16, 1864. Confederate naval documents signed by Bureau Chief Mitchell and/or Flag Officer Tucker are hard to obtain, making this letter, written by Mitchell and signed twice by Tucker prohibitively rare. Light ghosting and weakened folds, very good condition.
