(Confederate Naval Signals) A fascinating set of orders concerning troop strength and naval signals to be used in the defense of Shell Point (Charleston), 3pp. folio, Feb. 21, 1864 Secretarialy signed for Lt. Col. Joseph Yates, the orders set forth the light signals to be used by friendly vessels approaching shore, and actions to be taken should Union forces undertake a landing. In part: should the same boat discover the approach of Monitors , two 2 blue lights will be burned... Fort Sumter will report the signal. . made by Fort Sumter without waiting for the signal from the Lookout Boat . under no circumstances will a sentinel be allowed to sit... upon being challenged, should answer look sharp . At the time, Sumter was under sporadic bombardment and several landings had already been attempted.
