Description:

(CONFEDERATE MEDICAL SERVICE) DR. WILLIAM A. CARRINGTON
(1830-1866) Surgeon & Inspector of Hospitals to the 5th Virginia Volunteers on May 16, 1861. On Oct 1, 1862 he became Inspector of Hospitals under Gen. Gustavus Smith, and by March 1863 he was Inspector of all Richmond hospitals and, in 1864, appointed Medical Director of all of Virginia's hospitals. The war completely wore him out and, broken in health, he returned home where he died a few days after his father. War-date manuscript D.S. signed at conclusion, with three A.E.S.s on verso, Special Order No. 199 on 'Medical Director's Office letterhead, 1p. 4to., Richmond, Nov. 24, 1863. Carrington relieves Surgeon H. M. Clarkson from Duthay 'Gen. Hosp. No. 1' in Lynchburg and orders him to report for reassignment. On the verso, Carrington's three A.E.S.s instruct that Clarkson await orders, the final endorsement sending him to Columbia. Some uneven toning and old archival tape repairs to folds, still quite good.
