Fine lot of four items signed by Confederate state governors, includes: JOHN LETCHER (1813 - 1884), Confederate governor of Virginia who was succeeded by ‘Extra Billy' Smith and imprisoned for several months following the South's surrender. Partly-printed war-date D.S., 1p. 4to., [Richmond], Sep. 28, 1863, a certificate commissioning G. C. Pope and B. B. Kindred justices of the peace for Southampton County. Letcher signs boldly in black ink at lower right, with Secretary of the Commonwealth GEORGE W. MUMFORD countersigning at left. Shows folds, with splits thereto repaired on the verso with cello tape, and two small chips to the edges, else very good. WITH: ANDREW G. MAGRATH (1813-1893), Last Confederate governor of South Carolina from, served a partial term before being imprisoned at Fort Pulaski by Union forces at war's end. Partly-printed D.S., 1p. legal folio, Charleston, [n.d.], 1870, a ‘summons for money demand' issued to four business partners. Magrath signs in black ink at lower right in executing the name of his law firm ‘Magrath & Landers' as attorneys for the plaintiffs, and signs so again on the verso. Shows folds with slight splits thereto, with slight toning to the edges, else very good. WITH: FRANCIS W. PICKENS (1805-1869), Confederate Governor of South Carolina who ordered the bombardment of Fort Sumter. Signature ‘F. W. Pickens' in black ink on a 2.75 x 1 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter. Tabbed to a larger card (3.75 x 2.25 in.), with a period ink identifying inscription at bottom right, else very good. WITH: JOHN J. PETTUS (1813-1867), Governor of Mississippi from 1859 to 1863, a strong supporter of secession to defend the 'superiority and supremacy of the white race'. Forced to flee to Alabama by the Union capture of Jackson in 1863. Signature in black ink on a 3.5 x 1.25 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter. Tabbed to a larger card (4.75 x 3 in.), toned overall, else very good. Four pieces.
