Description:

CONFEDERATE GENERALS ROBERT E. RODES, EARL VAN DORN AND THOMAS JORDON
ROBERT E. RODES (1829-1864) Confederate major general who led Stonewall Jackson's brigade with distinction at the Battle of Chancellorsville, recommended for promotion to major general by Jackson on his deathbed, later killed in action at the Third Battle of Winchester. Rare, very fine association war-date A.E.S. on a manuscript document, 1p. 4to., Union Mills Ford, VA, Nov. 5, 1861, a statement written by a surgeon certifying that a Capt. Eugene Blackford is suffering from an intermittent fever, and suggesting that he receive a medical furlough. Rodes pens his endorsement below: ‘Approved- Capt. Blackford is a reliable officer, and I am extremely desirous that he shall be permitted to go home (to Lynchburg)…' He signs ‘R. E. Rodes' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘Brig. Genl.' On the verso appears the additional A.E.S. of EARL VAN DORN (1820-1863), Confederate major general whose raid on Holly Springs destroyed Grant's supply depot, only to be killed later by a jealous husband. He forwards the request and signs his full signature in black ink, adding his rank ‘Maj Genl Div'. Finally, the request is approved by the order of corps commander Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard, with the endorsement signed in black ink by Adjutant General THOMAS JORDAN (1819-1895), soon to be promoted to brigadier general, who served under Beauregard at First Bull Run, and later under Johnston at Shiloh.  Shows original mailing folds with very slight toning overall, otherwise in very good to fine condition. Overall an excellent document bearing the signatures of three notable Confederate generals, two of whom would not survive the war.
