Description:

CONFEDERATE GENERALS LEONIDAS POLK AND LLOYD TILGHMAN
A very fine association pair of A.E.S.'s on an interesting war-date letter, 1p. legal folio, [n.p.], Dec. 14, 1861, from Capt. Lewis C. Waggoner to his commanding colonel, resigning his commission due to illness. In part: ‘Being seriously afflicted now and having been so for some months past which has rendered me unable to perform any active military duty and which now prevents me from doing active service I beg leave to tender herewith through you to the proper department my unconditional resignation of the office of Captain of Company I 1oth Regt Tenn Vol…', signing at the conclusion in black ink with his rank. The request is endorsed below as approved by Waggoner's colonel, an A. Heiman. It is next approved by LLOYD TILGHMAN (1816-1863), Confederate brigadier general who surrendered Fort Henry, later commanded at Corinth and Vicksburg, and was killed in action by artillery fire at Champion Hill. He executes and signs his endorsement in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig Gen… Comdg &c'. The request is finally endorsed at bottom left by LEONIDAS POLK (1809-1864), Confederate lieutenant general who was a bishop of Louisiana before the war, led with distinction at Belmont and Shiloh, killed by cannon fire at Kennesaw Mountain. He executes his endorsement ‘Approved' and signs ‘L. Polk' in black ink, adding his contemporary rank ‘Maj Genl Cmg'. The letter shows ink spotting at lower right, away from any signatures, with original mailing folds showing a small interior hole and chip to the edge, otherwise in fine overall condition. An excellent document signed by two notable Confederate generals who would fall in battle.
