Description:

CONFEDERATE GENERALS (3)
Good lot of three items signed by Confederate generals, includes: RICHARD LUCIAN PAGE (1807-1901) Confederate brigadier general who was a career naval office prior to the war. Most noted as the commander of Confederate forces defending Mobile Bay when it was attacked by the Union, holding the besieged Fort Morgan for two weeks before its surrender. Bold signature ‘R. L. Page' in black ink on a 4 x 1.75 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter. Mounted to the verso of an unrelated advertising card, shows adhesive stains overall, else very good. WITH: JOSEPH H. LEWIS (1824-1904) Confederate brigadier general, fought at Shiloh, Murfreesboro and Chickamauga, surrendered to Union forces as part of Jefferson Davis' escort during his flight from Richmond. Signature ‘Jos H Lewis' in black ink on a 3 x 1.75 in. card, adding his rank ‘Brig Gen. C. S. A.' Signed a second time on the verso, adding ‘Glasgow Ky', this second signature marred by adhesive residue and mounting remnants, else very good overall. WITH: GUSTAVUS W. SMITH (1819-1895) Major General of the Army of Northern Virginia before Robert E. Lee assumed command, and interim Secretary of War for the Confederacy. A.E.S. ‘G. W. Smith' on a 2.75 x 1.75 in. slip of paper cut from a larger document, Richmond, VA, Oct. 14, 1862, adding ‘Respy. forwarded' and his rank ‘Maj Genl Comg'. The entire endorsement is very faint, with notable toning and soiling, just good overall. Three pieces.
