Description:

CONFEDERATE D-GUARD BOWIE KNIFE
A very rare Confederate D-guard Bowie knife by knife-marker J. J. Ford and marked as such on the hilt. The knife is 14" overall and 5/16" thick with a single edge blade and a 2 3/4" false blade. The blade is generally smooth and gray, not-resharpened but quite sharp in keeping with Confederate knives in general. The guard is rather roughly forged with numerous small pits with a tapered quillon, deep patina and a heavy 716" peen. The one-piece wooden grip is faceted to an octagonal shape and rounded to fit the hand on the inside. The hilt bears some scattered pitting but the grip is fine, bearing a rich patina. Die-stamped with 1/4" block letters that read: "J. J. Ford", thus providing two distinct and intriguing possibilities about the knife's ownership, and possibly relate to the same soldier. J. J. Ford made Bowie knives for the State of Georgia and, on June 3, 1862, delivered 136 - possibly to Chattanooga - that were ordered by state contract. Additionally, Georgia military records indicate that one John J. Ford mustered into Co. E. of the Georgia Infantry on July 17, 1861. He was severely wounded in action at 2nd Manassas on Aug. 30, 1862 and was on wounded furlough and serving as Sub-Enrolling Officer in Gwinnett County, Georgia - possibly his home. From Aug. 11, 1863 to Oct. 4, 1864, he is listed has having still been on wounded furlough. As of Feb. 28, 1865 there is no further record. A fine example with a superb history.
