CONFEDERATE CHILDREN'S BOOKS
A fine pair of Confederate imprints including a rare volume entitled The Confederate First Reader: Containing Selections in Prose and Poetry, as Reading Exercises for the Young Children in the Schools and Families of the Confederate States (Richmond: George L. Bidgood, 1864) viii, 120 pp. 12mo., Bound in stiff titled yellow paper boards. Binding tight, dampstains and soiling to covers, light foxing to pages, else very good condition. The second volume, by A. De V. Chaudron, is entitled Chaudron's Spelling Book, Carefully Prepared for Family and School Use (Mobile: S. H. Goetzel, 1865) Fifth Edition "Fortieth Thousand" 48pp. 12mo., illus. Bound in titled and illustrated paper wraps. Dealer's catalog description pasted into top of front leaf, moderate foxing to cover and pages, binding a bit frayed on surface but intact, else very good condition. Ex Fay Collection, Riba, 1985.
