Description:

CONFEDERATE CAVALRYMAN LORENZO D. FATELY''S REVOLVERS, KNIFE AND AMBROTYPE PHOTOGRAPH
A stunning group of Confederate cavalry relics, all belonging to Lorenzo D. Fately, a 1st Corporal with the 7th Virginia Cavalry under famed commander Turner Ashby, the "Black Knight of the Confederacy". Included in the group are a pair of .44-caliber Colt Army Model 1860 revolvers, 7 1/2" barrel, 14" overall, serial numbers "23435" and "23828", with original black leather holsters. The metal components of the revolvers show an even dark brown patina overall, and the walnut grips show some cracking and small chips, while the holsters show extensive cracking and wear commensurate with age. Also present is a large, hand forge hunting and fighting knife, 8 1/2" blade, 15"overall, with a clip-style blade and a cylindrical wood grip. The blade is secured by wide brass bolsters at the top and bottom of the handle. The bolsters shows some slight verdigris, and the blade shows a dark oxidized patina overall, with two or three nicks to the cutting edge, else very good. The group is rounded out by an original wartime ambrotype photograph set into a 2" x 3" gutta-percha case, showing Fately in uniform seated beside his then -girlfriend, Barbara Ann Will. All of the above listed items are mounted in a large display case, with a brass plaque reading: "Weapons of Lorenzo D. Fadeley, 1st Cpl. Co. C 7th Regt. Va. Vol. Cav., Neither He Nor His Regiment Ever Surrendered". Accompanying the group are a pair of letters from Mrs. Martha Burner, stating that the revolvers and knife belonged to her husband, Daniel F. Burner, Sr. the grandson of Lorenzo D. Fately on his mother''s side, and that they were handed down through the family following the latter''s death. We have located burial records, presented here, for Daniel F. Burner, Sr., stating that he is the son of William Magruder Burner and Bertie Fately Burner. Burial records for Bertie Fately Burner list Lorenzo Dowe Fately and Barbara Ann Will Fately as her parents. Burial records for Lorenzo Dowe Fately confirm this relation. It is unknown why the letter of provenance and the plaque use the spelling "Fadeley"; it is written as "Fately" on Lorenzo''s headstone, although his parents and several of his children appear in the burial records we have examined are listed as "Fadely". The 7th Virginia Cavalry was raised in the spring of 1861 by Confederate Col. Angus William McDonald, and placed under the command of Col. Turner Ashby. Under his leadership, they participated in several engagements around Harpers Ferry, as well as Stonewall Jackson''s Shenandoah Valley Campaign. During this campaign, Ashby was killed at the Battle of Good''s Farm, being shot through the heart while urging his men to charge. Despite the loss of their commander, the 7th Virginia Cavalry would go on to take part in the Gettysburg Campaign and the Battle of Brandy Station, and were present at Appomattox Court House at the time of the Confederate surrender, although most of the regiment escaped through Union lines to return to their homes.
