388. CONFEDERATE CAVALRY CIRCULAR A nice war-date printed Confederate Cavalry circular, 1p. 8vo., General Order No. 2 signed in type by Major General Joseph Wheeler, "Head Quarters Wheeler's Cavalry Corps", Feb. 10, 1864 concerning six exact military rules for his officers to follow as Wheeler whipped his cavalry command into an elite fighting force. In part: "...the following schools of instruction will be established and maintained at all times, except when upon the march...the captains and lieutenants of each Regiment will be organized into a school, and will recite daily to the Regimental commander...the non-commissioned officers of each company, together with two or more of the most intelligent privates will...be formed daily and...drilled...in the school of the Trooper, Platoon, an in the use of the sabre...all officers found to be in any way incompetent...of their positions will be immediately relieved from duty...in drilling, officers will exact the entire attention of the men, never allowing them to talk in ranks, or become listless while being instructed...officers of this corps will be required to wear sabers at all times when on duty...". In 1863, Wheeler published his version of revised cavalry and mounted infantry tactic book that emphasized the use of long arms by troopers thereby allowing those men to fight on foot as well as on horseback. Negligible paper loss and damp stains, else very good. $300-400
