Description:
Enfield .69 cal. Model 1842 musket bayonet, almost certainly C.S.A.-issue, dug at Gettysburg. The 17.5 in. 'dug' bayonet has had the terminal 2.5 in. of the blade bent back upon itself. Many claim that such bayonets were used as 'body hooks' to drag the dead off the field toward makeshift graves. This particular example, from a private collection, was purchased from Sharpsburg Arsenal in the 1990s.
