Description:

CONFEDERATE A.H. DUFILHO SWORD
Fine, rare Civil War relic: a Confederate foot officer's sword made by the New Orleans-based cutler Alexandre Henri Dufilho. Superbly constructed in a design similar to the Federal Model 1850 officer's sword, this Dufilho sword measures 34" in total, with a 29" cut-down blade, floral scrolls in the counter-guard, and original leather grip with twisted brass wire. Stamped, "DUFILHO/N.ORLEANS" at the base of the blade. The handguard etchings appear to be of the magnolia, which would become Louisiana's official state flower in 1900, and grip leather is likely sharkskin. Dufilho swords are considered rare; it is not known how many he made, or how many still exist, making this a unique piece of history. Blade is missing its scabbard, and has the expected age-marring and pitting on the blade. Fine patina on guardwork with only the slightest oxidizing at the blade base, grip in very good condition.
