Description:

CONFEDERATE 12 STAR FIRST NATIONAL FLAG
Exceptional Confederate 12 star First National Flag, undoubtedly a captured example, originally from the collection of noted collector and dealer Norm Flayderman. The flag, absolutely correct in every detail, measures 58" inches on the fly and 38" on the hoist, with a 3/4" wide canvas leading border. It is constructed of bunting with cotton stars and hand-sewn eyelets on the canvas reinforcement. The flag bears four small holes where souvenir pieces of cloth were removed, and also bears a few other tears, possibly period, with no appreciable loss of material. It has been partially backed with similarly-colored material which is very lightly tacked to the flag, simply for purposes of appearance and done so with no detrimental effect to the flag itself. When our consignor personally purchased the flag from Flayderman, he was advised that it had been obtained in Pennsylvania. According to a detailed 1984 letter (included) from flag expert Howard Madaus to Flayderman, this is most likely a company presentation flag from late 1861, after the recognition of Missouri as a Confederate state but prior to the publication of Kentucky's joining the Confederacy (Dec. 10, 1861). Furthermore, in analyzing the 26 similar flags attributable to specific state units at the time he wrote his analysis, Madaus found only one example bearing "surprisingly similar characteristics": that of Co. C of the "Dixie Rangers" of the 65th George Infantry. Using less strict criteria, Madaus concluded that the flag likely originated: "in the Mississippi River Valley during November or December of 1861". While Confederate First Nationals are not exceedingly rare, prime examples such as this one, presented to a company, captured, and bearing unimpeachable provenance, are much more desirable.
