Description:

CONCENTRATION CAMP SS MAN'S DOG TAG
Concentration camp SS man's 'dug' dog tag, 2.75 in. wide, with stamped lettering on one side reading: 'WAFFEN-SS', the verso reading: 'SS-SONDERLAGER 93 HINZERT'. These dog tags did not carry the soldier's name, but instead used the reference number (in this case, '93') which could otherwise be easily accessed if need be. Sonderlager Hinzert was near the town of Hinzert-Polert in the Trier-Saarburg district in southwest Germany. Hinzert was founded in 1938 as a work camp for Germans who were obligated to work for the Todt Organisation on the autobahn and the Westwall. Political prisoners were deported from Luxembourg from 1941 onwards and the ‘work camp' increasingly took on the character of a concentration camp. In October 1941, 70 Russian prisoners of war were murdered in Hinzert by poisonous injections. By 1942, in order to justify the cost of the camp, it became a 'death through labor' camp. Although the majority of the Hinzert prisoners were transferred to other camps or were kept imprisoned until their liberation, many were tortured and murdered at Hinzert. Despite its being 'only' a transit camp, 321 prisoners were killed there. The victims were often shot, drowned or killed by lethal injection. According to trial records, SS guards also tortured prisoners, left them to die of sickness or hunger, or fed them to dogs.
