Description:

Three cased slides, each 2 x 2 in., taken by a U.S. Army photographer at Buchenwald concentration camp during an inspection by Eisenhower, and other U.S. Army officers at war's end. Images showing what appears to be the US 3rd Army inspection of April 17, 1945. These previously unpublished slides are quite possibly the very first images of Eisenhower's arrival at Buchenwald and were developed and mounted into their slide frames in Germany, with German photographic mounting supplies. The first chilling image depicts Eisenhower, U.S. officers, U.S. soldiers, and some prisoners, inspecting two mounds of deceased, emaciated prisoner bodies outside of the crematorium building, another closer image of the same pile of corpses, and a final image showing an immense pile of human bones (largely crushed) and ashes. These photographs are from a known and famous sequence of photographs sometimes seen elsewhere. To our knowledge, these images are all previously unpublished. All three slides bear the serial number 'ELBE 0026' and the DRGM number '1433360'. A chilling reminder of the resulting destruction that occurs when a totalitarian government is allowed to operate unfettered by any laws. Slides and frames are in very good condition.
