Description:

CONCENTRATION CAMP PRISONER'S DRAWING OF MAUTHAUSEN GUARD GEORG BACHMAYER
Original concentration camp inmate's drawing of brutal SS-Hauptsturmführer and SS-TV GEORG BACHMAYER (1913-1945), 9" x 7 1/4". The ink and pencil drawing was undertaken by Spanish prisoner Moises Fernandez, most likely at Mauthausen concentration camp where the Spanish anti-Nationalist was being held but in any event drawn no later than June, 1945. In this vile caricature, Bachmayer is depicted riding on a woman's back as she is sodomized by a creature behind her. Top-hatted Bachmayer in turn has bottles of wine resting in his lap as he urinates on his dog "Lord" at the front of his "parade". There are other naked women and assorted creatures surrounding him. The drawing has had some pencil additions, probably not by Fernandez. The verso bears additional pencil notes identifying the piece, Fernandez as artist, and stating that it had been recovered by an American soldier. Soiled and wrinkled, crudely taped to an equally soiled mat and worthy of much better attention. Bachmayer was clearly a sadist. His speciality was to set two mastiff-like bloodhounds, including his "Lord", on inmates who which would literally be torn to pieces. This was known in camp jargon as "dying from the dog's kiss". The back has provenance indicating that it was taken from Fernandez by Gerard Oppenheimer at Linz Austria. It is dated 1948, and could have been part of the evidence at the war trials. Gerard Oppenheimer was a member of the US Counter-intelligence Corps and was attached to the 11th Armoured Division at Linz.
