Description:

A very rare relic, a doll almost undoubtedly made in a concentration camp's sewing room and probably used as entertainment or perhaps given as a gift. The 23" doll bears a papier mache head with a caricature of a Jew's face with a hooked nose, large ears, etc. The remnants of pieces of hand-stitched white fur remain glued to the figure's scalp. The head is attached to a body dressed in beige twill with brown trim, the body also fitted with hands and black feet. Glass buttons are affixed at front, and a prisoner number, Star of David and a belt made from a scrap of concentration camp uniform have also been affixed to the figure. The doll is stuffed with scraps of cloth and thread, typical of what one would find on the floor of a sewing room. Such sewing rooms did exist at the camps, making uniforms, head gear, etc. This is by no means a commercially manufactured piece! The doll was discovered by our consignor in a suitcase found by him in Germany which contained similar dolls which also bore caricature features of Jews. We can only speculate why this doll was made - on order by a camp guard or officer, or perhaps to amuse children...or adults? In excellent condition, in a rather soiled but gaily decorated period box.
