Description:

382. COMMANDER OF FORT FISHER POWDER BOAT ALBUMEN A nice war-date albumen, approx. 3" square, mounted on thin stock, showing Naval Commander Alexander Rhind seated with his staff onboard the USS Agawam. During the war he commanded the USS Keokuk when on April 7, 1863 when the Union fleet attacked Fort Sumter. His ironclad vessel was struck over ninety times and sank, and in the first assault on Fort Fisher in December 1864, he captained the ill-fated powder boat Louisiana which was deliberately exploded within 250 yards of the fort in the hopes of reducing the structure to ruins. Although the explosion failed, Rhind redeemed himself during the battle and was recommended by Admiral Porter for promotion. He finished his career as rear admiral before his death in 1897. Fine. $150 - 200
