COMMANDER AT LAKEHURST RECEIVES DECEASED HINDENBURG CAPTAIN''S WEDDING RING
CHARLES E. ROSENDAHL (1892–1977) Navy vice admiral and an advocate of lighter-than-air flight, commander of the U.S. Naval Air Station at Lakehurst, NJ when the Hindenburg crashed and burned there in 1937. Rosendahl also headed the official inquiry into the disaster. Rare A.D.S., 1p. 8vo., [Lakehurst], May 13, 1937, a week after the famous zeppelin Hindenburg crashed and burned at Lakehurst taking 36 lives. Rosendahl writes a receipt in pencil on a Western Union message form to Col. William Gray Schauffler, Jr. who would later serve on the board of inquiry which would examine the crash. Rosendahl writes, in full: "May 13, 1937 Received of Paul Kimball Hospital envelope containing wedding ring and telegrams of Capt. E[rnst] Lehmann Airship Hindenburgh [sic] through Col. W G Schauffler Jr. C E Rosendahl". Toned at margins which are a bit rough, else very good. Lehmann was fatally burned when the ship caught fire and died the following day. It was initially believed that he would recover from his injuries; he was scheduled to be transferred to the hospital at Rockefeller University for further treatment until he took a sudden turn for the worse the afternoon before his death.
