815. (SAMUEL COLT) (1814 - 1862) American inventor and gun manufacturer, inventor of the revolver who founded the Patent Arms Manufacturing Co. and made a fortune during the Mexican War. Fine content manuscript A.L.S. on a sheet of Colt's letterhead, 1p. 4to., Hartford, [n.d. but ca. 1860s], in pencil by W. B. Franklin to Russian Minister A. Katikasy [?], in preparation of a visit from Alexis, Grand Duke of Russia. In part: "...Understanding that His Highness the Grand Duke Alexis of Russia will pass through Hartford in the course of his journey through the United States, and as this Company has done much for the government of His Majesty the Emperor, we are anxious that if it be found convenient the Grand Duke and his suite may visit the Factory...As we learn that his arrival here will be somewhat late in the day, Mrs. Colt desires you to be informed that her house will be placed at your disposition, so that the Great Duke and his Suite can dine and sleep there. We not consider that the acceptance of this invitation can form a precedent for this is a public corporation of which Mrs. Colt is the principal owner, and she feels under obligations to the Government of his Imperial Majesty for many favors here as well as in Russia...".
