Description:

COLT MODEL 1877 DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER
A .38 caliber colt model 1877 double action revolver, 9 in. long, nicknamed ‘Lightning', the company's first attempt at a double action revolver. Features a six-shot cylinder with long flutes, black rubber textured grips, fixed sights, and an ejector rod. Engraved on the barrel is the text ‘COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A. COLT D.A. 38'. The serial number ‘113569' dates this firearm to 1899. At the left of the frame and on either side of the grips is the circled Rampant Colt stamp. Minimal wear with a dent to the bottom of the right grip, otherwise in beautiful condition. Despite the success of these guns, there were known issues such as malfunctioning with exposure to weather, dust, and dirt, and an intricate mechanism vulnerable to failure of self cocking. Among some of the notable owners were outlaw Billy the Kid and painter Frederic Remington.
