Description:

COLORED WOMEN''S POLITICAL LEAGUE PAMPHLET
Scarce original pamphlet, 4pp. 4 1/2" x 8 1/2", released by the Colored Women''s Political League of Philadelphia. The primary focus of the pamphlet is to publish the poem "America''s Day", by poet Ida S. Wright, dated April 7, 1921. In part: "... All men must equal be/This they say of you and me/But, when they are all in power/Equality doesn''t last an hour/Whom do they mean? ... Then why this everlasting fuss/The world was made for all of us/The rich, the poor, the blacks, the whites/Are all alike when America fights;/Then whom do they mean? ... So wipe your eyes and dry your tears/Unloose that hate your bosom bears/Stay the demon''s murderous aim/That sends disgrace on your fair name/Cast out your dirty Jim Crow fare/And give us all an equal share/And treat us as you would like to see/Your sons and daughters treated, free..." Most interestingly, the back page of the pamphlet bears a statement of the League''s motto, beliefs and objectives, in part: "... Motto: Helping Our Own, Regardless of the Party ...We believe in the Constitution of the United States. We also believe in Racialism. Racial Pride, Racial Respect and Racial Demands. We''ll use our ballot to fight a Negro Hater on the Republican ticket, just as quickly as we would fight him on any other ticket. In the Colored Women''s Political League the Race is first ... We like Socialism, we like Democracy, we like Republicanism - but, we will not support a Socialist, we will not support a Democrat, nor will we support a Republican who refuses to recognize the Negro as an American rather than a Negro, as a citizen rather than a Slave. We''ll support any man in any party as long as it means a chance for the betterment of the Race..." Present with the pamphlet is an original 3 14" x 6" postcard photograph of a middle aged African-American woman, presumably Ida S. Wright herself. Details regarding Ida S. Wright and the Colored Women''s Political League are extremely sparse: we have found records indicating that they participated in the 1896 convention of the National American Suffrage Association, at which time the League was stated to be based in New York. Beyond this, no information on the League is available, and they may have been incorporated into the National Association of Colored Women''s Clubs or a similar organization. The pamphlet shows some chipping and wear at the edges, with spots of soiling, and the accompanying photograph shows some silvering, else very good.
