COLONIAL WOMAN GIFTS LAND TO HER SONS, SPURNING NEIGHBORS
Very early A.D.S., 1p.11 3/4" x 7", [Fairfield], April 19, 1675, the affidavit of Sarah Willson who, as administrator of the estate of her husband, Thomas Bulkeley, gifts a parcel of land owned by him to her sons, and denies her neighbors'' claim of ownership of that land. In small part: "... my said husband dyed possessed of certain lands on the other side of the Creeke: and in particular a parcell of land in the said feild on the other side of the Creeke being in quantity about Seven Acres more or less lying and adjoining unto the lands pertayning to the sons of Thomas Moorhouse deceased: this said parcell of land is claimed by the sons of the said Thomas - as their owne land; and as they afferm by a sale from my self either to their father or their brother Samuel or to both: which I doe not remember no know nothing of any such thinge... I doe by these present freely give and grant unto my loving sonns Joseph Bulkeley and Ely Browne all that above parcell of land over the Creeke: above particularly mentioned and to their heirs for ever to enjoy and possess as their owne free-land without any let or claim or molestation from me or from my heirs... [all sic]" Willson signs at the conclusion in black ink, while William Hill, who drafted the document, and Hannah Bulkeley countersign as witnesses, Hannah with her initials "H B". The document show a single vertical fold, partially split, with slight scattered foxing, else very good. Sold with a modern hand-written transcript. Pre-Revolutionary War legal documents signed by women and attesting to their ownership of land are scarce.

International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
