COLONIAL CONNECTICUT RECEIPT FOR THE SALE OF A SLAVE
Excessively rare manuscript signed document., a colonial New England slave receipt, 1p. oblong 8vo., Canterbury, CT, January 1, 1763 in which it is stated: "I Seth Dean and Lydia his wife in Canterbury in the County of Windham...for ye Consideration of twenty pounds lawfull money already in hand...have sold and conveyed away four our selves and heairs for ever one Negro man Slave named Lendor to ye above named John Allyn...said negro man slave is about forty years old...", signed by the parties to the sale at bottom. Some tricial spotting, else very good. Slavery in Connecticut dates to the mid 1600''s and by the time of the American Revolution, Connecticut held the largest population of slaves in all of New England. In 1784 Connecticut''s general assembly passed the Gradual Abolition Act which freed, at twenty five, all persons born into slavery. The stain of slavery was not fully abolished in Connecticut until 1848. Reverend Seth Dean (1715-1782) graduated Yale College in 1738, moved to Rindge, NH to serve as its first pastor, and returned to East Putnam, Connecticut in 1780. John Allyn (1734-1776) was a farmer form Pomfret, Connecticut and is now buried at Brooklyn, CT. This is perhaps only the thirs Connecticut slave bill of sale we''ve encountered in over thirty years.
