COLMAR FREIHERR VON DER GOLTZ
(1843 - 1916) "Goltz Pasha", Prussian Field Marshal and military writer. Served with the Ottomans bringing them to the gates of Athens, was the ruthless military governor of Belgium during World War I, and returned to Ottoman service where he indirectly contributed to the Armenian genocide. Scarce L.S., 1p. 4to., Dijon, Nov. 26, 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War. He writes in English concerning a "token" sent for "refreshing officers and soldiers under my command". He continues: "...May this war and our successes be a lesson to the French, neither to provoke any war of this kind again nor to pursue this course of overbearing politics...". Paper tape repair on verso, a marginal split, else very good.
