Description:

Large collection of over 100 war-date letters written by and to Albert Maxey during World War II, many of them to his parents. His letters read in part: ‘...Just keep up the good spirits and I'm sure the war will be over before you know it...It's really hard to write letters, especially when it is censored...The draft is sure taking some young kids according to the paper clippings you sent me...Mom you're always worrying about me because I'm in radio. It really is swell work and I like it, so please don't worry...they are rationing gas, meat and cheese and butter, beans and fruit. They rationed nearly everything...Mom don't take that attitude that I'm still a noobie. I can take of myself and especially with a gun...The war has certainly changed us. Here we are scattered all over the world playing games, but this time it's for keeps...There are many men in our outfit who have over three years in the jungle. I don't know but the jungle does some funny things to a fellow...They seem to be shipping a lot of new men overseas, so something big might turn up any day...The red cross doesn't do a damn thing for us...If they give you anything you pay for it...I'm glad to hear Uncle Gene is well, and recovered from his wound in the leg. Maybe he will get a long rest, and then go back to the states. Everyone who just came out of a tough campaign should be allowed to rest up before going anywhere. We are enjoying a rest now, only it's still in New Guinea...Once I leave this place I hope to heck I never have to come back around this way. Let the natives keep the islands...our outfit...we are supposed to be one of the best trained in the world...We really were a little disappointed in this last invasion. We expected to encounter more Japs than we did...we did give a good account of ourselves...I read in our paper were Wesley Frunsko was missing in action. That's the second fellow from our gang that has been unfortunate...This point system will drop me behind a little. It looks like three years in the Pacific...' Included with the letters are several personal items of Maxey's, including holiday cards, old newspapers, a rations book, an Amarillo Army Field booklet, ‘Songs for Soldiers', an American Legion booklet containing advice from World War I veterans, a ‘Basic Field Manual Soldier's Handbook' released by the War Department and three photos of different men in uniform all likely of the Maxey family. A fine lot worthy of further research.
