Description:

Nice collection of 34 war-date letters written by Roger Steele, a medical corpsman in the U.S. Army, to his family and friends, the majority to his mother, from 1944 to 1945. His letters, largely unread by us, read in part: ‘...The boys went for a hike this afternoon but I didn't go. No one has told me to go so I am not going til I have to...this makes 1212 letters which I have written...I dug my first foxhole today...We went through the gas chamber tonight...Took on more patients today...practiced taking blood from the arm...about the same as the training I had in Florida...going to make out my will this afternoon...been in classes all day...We went up the road 15 miles yesterday with trucks and ambulance for our problem...Got to take another physical examination...Seems to me the army does things funny...they showed us a film today on how to get on the troop ship...Rode three hours in the ambulance last night in a blackout...I wouldn't be surprised if we went to France. Liable to go most anywhere...It seemed good to hear your voice again. It sounded just the same as it did two years ago...I haven't heard from Dot for 2 weeks ad 2 days She must have changed her mind again...Girls do funny things...This makes 1350 letters I have written...This may be my last uncensored letter...' Throughout his letters, Steele writes about going to Church and the ‘S.D.A. Boys' (‘Seventh-day Adventist Church'). The content of the letters paired with the fact many of them are written on American Red Cross letterhead make it clear Steele was a rather religious man who joined the military to be a medic. A fine lot worthy of further research.
