Description:

Nice collection of 22 war-date letters written by George Collins of the 982nd Signal Company, to his mother from 1942 to 1945. His letters read in part: ‘...I told you about the parade we have every week...we paraded yesterday and we won...our company is regarded as the best in camp...I've been classified here as a radio operator...a lot of people would give their right arm to get with this place...this is really the easiest branch of the army as far as labor and marching...here at Monmouth the officers course is terrific...I'm going to miss fishing this year...maybe next year I'll be able to go, I don't think the war will last any longer than that, I hope. I'll be glad to get out of N.J...I guess I'll go south from here most of the radio operators do...if I live through this I won't ever take an order from anybody again, since I've been in the army I haven't drawn a breath on my own initiative...My V E day was a happy one, but a dull one, we knew the war was over a couple of weeks ago...You must have heard about the points system, the government is going to use to release the boys...If I were a W.A.C. I wouldn't have enough points...I am in the ninth army now...Just thought of something else I have been going to send home...They are by-products of the business I used to work at. The one with the blue marks on it is the receiving tape and the one with the holes in it is the sending tape...I haven't done that kind of work since last Fall in Marseille...Three great big Scotsmen just pulled in here...I guess they were from that regiment that lost the drum at Dunkirk...Seventh army just gave it back to them yesterday after they recaptured it from the Germans. They had quite a ceremony over it yesterday...a total of 87 points, enough to get out of the army...This town of Resenheim is way up in Bavaria...Hitler's former hideout is not far away. Some of the boys have been up to see it...I saw a pretty good movie tonight...would have made me homesick a year ago, but all that has been drained out of me now, I have about as much sentiment as a totem pole now...' Throughout the years Collins does his best to keep his family informed on his movements, even if he doesn't get around to telling them until after V-E Day. A fine lot worthy of further research.
