1129. TY COBB (1886 - 1961) Baseball Hall of Famer, "The Georgia Peach" led the American League in batting 12 times, possibly the greatest hitter ever. Rare A.L.S. "Ty", also signed "Ty Cobb" and "Cobb" in the postscript, on the letterhead of his personal friend, Dr. Stewart Brown, 2pp. 4to., Royston, Ga., Oct. 13, 1949 to "Ken". In part: "...Enjoyed [World] series, my league won. Frances and I had a great time in N.Y. [The Yankees beat the Dodgers in five games]...met everyone, all simply carried away with Frances, even old Ed Barrow, the best guiding head in baseball...put his arms around her and kissed her...down here to see hospital roof on, much pleased with it [Cobb Memorial Hospital was dedicated in Royston on Jan. 22, 1950, built with the aid of a $100,000 donation by Cobb]...". Cobb then asks his friend for assistance in obtaining a Nevada driver's license for his wife, describing particulars to be given to the DMV, "no accidents or jail on old license", and so on. Folds, else near fine. Two years earlier, the 62-year-old Cobb had divorced his long-time wife Charlotte and a few months before writing this letter he had married 40-year-old Frances Fairburn Cass, a divorcee from Buffalo, New York.
