Description:

COAT HOOK FROM ADOLF HITLER''S BERGHOF
A most unusual Adolf Hitler relic, a wood coat and hat rack, 69" tall, bearing a coat hook retrieved from the Berghof, Adolf Hitler''s mountain retreat at Obersalzberg. The rack is fitted with four brass double hat hooks in two tiers at top. Below these is a brass triple coat hook, with an accompanying period engraved brass plaque, added by the G.I. who retrieved the relic: "Coat Hook from Hitler''s Mountain Retreat Berchtesgarden [sic] May, 1945". Accompanying the item is a typed statement, 1p. 4to., Shrewsbury, May 3, 1999, from former owner and historian Roscoe C. Blunt, Jr., in part: "This coat and hat rack was taken from Adolf Hitler''s Berghof (Eagle''s Nest), also known as Obersalzberg, atop a mountain at the village of Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps in May 1945 by an American soldier from Milford, MA. After hand carrying it back to America, the soldier showed it to his closest friend, a Marine who had returned from the Pacific Theater of Operations with a souvenir Japanese Samurai sword. Each admired the others souvenirs and decided to swap one for the other..." Two of the four wooden feet are separating from the central pole, with even patina to the brass hooks, else very good.
