Description:

An interesting relic pulled from the ‘soundproof room' in Hitler's bunker, almost certainly Hitler's personal living quarters in the bunker, a piece of green material from the settee and a strip of beige material from a chair, each approx. 2 x 0.5 in. These pieces were recovered by a British soldier only identified as ‘Billingsby' of No. 2 Platoon, 672 Army Troops. Accompanying this lot is a photocopy of a letter he sent home to his parents at the time of his find, dated July 14, 1945, which he wrote on Hitler's own letterhead. In part: ‘...We are living just on the outskirts of Berlin...Last night our company arranged a trip sight seeing into Berlin...The...Chancellery a most wonderful building I have ever seen. The Russians are out keeping guard over it but they allowed us to inspect the inside...We found quite a lot of useful stuff. I gathered quite a lot of the old boys writing paper, it is very good paper...I am sending you a little of materials out of the Chancellery. The bit of green off his settee and the other bit off his chair out of his sound proof room...'
