Description:

CLINTON B. FISK
(1828 - 1890) Union brigadier general who seized Camp Jackson as the war started, served throughout Missouri, and founded Fisk University as a school for freedmen. War-date A.L.S. ‘Clinton B. Fisk Brig. Genl. Comdg', 1p. 4to., Helena, Arkansas, Sept. 18, 1863, on letterhead of the 2nd Brigade Va. Vols. Fisk writes to fellow brigadier general Samuel H. Ross, in part: ‘…I am in receipt of your order of this date directing me to prepare my command for an early forward movement with axes, spades and shovels. I shall promptly obey, but ask you to allow me to suggest that my command are ill-fitted for heavy fatigue. One Regt. has been in the same duty for nearly two weeks, the others are all just recovering from measles, mumps and pneumonia and not half of the men reported for duty are able to swing an axe or use a shovel. They are all new Regts and just going through the process of seasoning. We will do the best we can…but if a large mortality list follows the sickness incurred by their labor, I desire my record to show that I was fearful of such result…'. Expertly inlaid, near fine.
