Description:

CLIFFORD K. BERRYMAN ORIGINAL CARTOON ART
Fine original artwork, 14" x 13 1/2", a political cartoon by CLIFFORD K. BERRYMAN (1869-1949), published in "The Washington Star" at the outset of the Cold War. The cartoon, executed in black ink, depicts a globe with a large rift down the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, dividing North America, which flies the United States flag, and Europe, which flies the flag of the Soviet Union. A caption at bottom, executed in pencil, reads: "The Atom Isn''t The Only Thing Being Split". Berryman finishes the illustration with his artist''s signature at lower right, while the top right corner bears the notation: "3 Col[umn] Sunday, July 13, 1947". Various notations appear on the verso, including the stamp "2nd Run Sunday". The cartoon shows minor soiling overall, else very good. Berryman served as cartoonist for the Star from 1907 to his death in 1949, but his most famous cartoon was first printed in the Washington Post in 1902. Entitled "Drawing the Line in Mississippi", it depicted then-president Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot a restrained bear cub, launching an immediate fad for stuffed toys called "Teddy bears". Another of Berryman''s cartoons also introduced the American rallying cry for the Spanish-American war: "Remember the Maine!"
