375. GROVER CLEVELAND Good content A.L.S. as President on Executive Mansion letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., June[?] 11, 1886 to Secretary of the Interior L.Q.C. Lamar. In part: "...I have a vague impression that you once said to me...that you ought not to look further at the case against [Edward] Clark, Architect of the Capitol, before I passed upon it. If you have any such idea will you please inform me so that I can return the papers to you before I examine them at all?...". Vertical split carefully repaired with archival tape, light soiling, else very good. Clark was appointed Capitol architect by President Andrew Johnson August 30, 1865 and completed a major extension project in 1868. Clark introduced many technological improvements to the Capitol, including electricity, steam heat, and elevators. The reason for Lamar's proposed lawsuit in unknown to us. $500 - 600
