GEORGES CLEMENCEAU (1841-1929) French statesman; affectionately known as "the Tiger'"; war correspondent in American Civil War, with Grant's Army; member of the Chamber of Deputies; senator; Premier of France; led France through critical days of World War I; headed French delegation to Peace Conference at Paris. Scarce A.L.S. "G. Clemenceau" 1p., 4to, Paris, October 19, 1926, in English, responding to a related letter written to him, in part:"...I hasten to thank you for your very kind letter. The plain fact is that my arteries are in good order and that I have had diabetes which I consider as cured by insulin...". Below Clemenceau's bold signature appears the A.L.S. from "W.G. McAlexander Major General U.S. Army Ret'd.", explaining that "This letter was written in reply to an invitation to M. Georges Clemenceau to come to America, without expense to himself, for treatment for arterio Sclerosis and Diabetes. He declined the invitation as indicated above".
