686. (GEORGE ROGERS CLARK) (1752-1818) American Revolutionary soldier and frontier explorer, led the defense of Kentucky against Indian raids, led militia in the defense of Illinois and Kentucky. A land grant No. 2130 1p. 8vo., Va., Jan. 29, 1780, given to Clark with the intention that he disburse this land to his men during the defense of the Illinois Territory. However, instead of giving these tracts of land to his soldiers as payment for a job well done, Clark kept them and reaped the profit from their subsequent sale! One of the original land grants given by Thomas Jefferson to Clark, with red-wax seal at top. Loss at seal, evenly toned, very good. $100-150
