Description:

CLAIRE CHENNAULT
(1890 - 1958) American Army aviator who established the volunteer-staffed Flying Tigers to fight the Japanese invasion of China. He has also been (unofficially) credited with over 40 'kills'. Fine association signed and inscribed book, Chennault's memoir ‘Way of a Fighter' (New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons), 1949. 375pp. 8vo. Chennault signs boldly ‘C. L. Chennault' on the half-title page in black ink, adding the place and date ‘Washington July 5, 1949', with a dedication to LUCIUS ROY HOLBROOK (1875-1952), U.S. Army Major General who commanded the Philippine Department from 1936-1938. Holbrook, in turn, signs ‘Roy Holbrook' at the top of the facing flyleaf in black ink, adding his Bethesda address and the date ‘1949'. Chennault's signature shows a spot of bleeding affecting the letters ‘au', and the book is missing its original dust jacket, with some internal splits to the binding and with the green cloth covers showing bumps to the corners and wear overall, with more extensive wear to the spine.
