CIVIL WAR NOTABLES
Lot of three letters of prominent figures of the Civil War era. Includes: HORACE GREELEY (1811 - 1872) American journalist and founder of the New York Tribune which advocated abolition, and universal amnesty and suffrage. Greeley also posted bail for Jefferson Davis, A.L.S. on Tribune letterhead, 1p. 8vo., New York, Aug. 14, 1865 mentioning that all of his time is being used in compiling his "History of the War" and he therefore declines to speak; CARL SCHURZ (1829 - 1906) Union major general who fought under Howard at Gettysburg and led his own division at Chattanooga, A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., New York, Feb. 11, 1890 declining to give a speech at Wharton; and EDWARD EVERETT (1794 - 1865) American clergyman and statesman, a brilliant orator who spoke prior to Lincoln at Gettysburg, A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 23, 1829, forwards a letter. Also present is a cut signature of railroad owner AUGUSTUS[?] SCHOLL. Four pieces.
