Description:

CIVIL WAR-ERA NAVAL RATING INSIGNIA
A fine lot of six Civil War-era U.S. Navy sleeve insignia for enlisted ranks, each constructed of white linen and bearing a stenciled image in black ink denoting the wearer's rating. The examples presented here include: petty officer, 4 x 4.25 in., depicting an eagle perched on an anchor beneath an inverted star in white on a black background, a design introduced in 1852 and worn on the right sleeve below the shoulder; machinist (two examples, 3 x 3.5 in. and 2.75 x 3.5 in.), depicting a white wheelwork on a black background; captain of tops, 3.25 x 3 in., depicting a knotted rope in black on a white background; gunner's mate, 3 x 3 in., depicting crossed cannons with muzzles down in black on a white background; and boatswain, 3 x 4 in., depicting a fouled anchor in black on a white background. One machinist's example shows two small tears, reinforced on the reverse with archival tape, while the remainder each show minor discoloration, but are in very good to fine condition overall.
