Description:

Interesting American Civil War-era fencing epee, 34 1/4" blade, 42 1/2" overall, with a brass pommel, cross guard and bowl-shaped hand guard securing a square cross-section grip wrapped with braided wire. The blade features a triangular cross section becoming square at the blunted tip. All three panels of the blade bear cursive engravings at the ricasso; of these, only "New York" is legible, although an owner's or maker's name also appears to be present. It is speculated that the weapon was utilized by the military academy at West Point, which has featured fencing as part of its physical fitness program since the school's founding. Two additional unidentified hallmarks also appear on the reverse ricasso. Shows slight oxidation to the grip wrapping and the blade, with no pitting to the latter, else very good. Provenance: The War Museum, New York.
