CIVIL WAR DIARY OF MUSICIAN PVT. HENRY P. MUSTY The Civil War diary of Pvt. Henry P. Musty of the 61st Ohio Infantry who served as a foot soldier and musician from Feb. 26, 1962 until transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on Oct. 14, 1863. Musty's diary covers the period from Jan. 1 - Sept. 9, 1862, with three daily entries per page. Most of the entries are in pencil, some require a bit of effort to read. In small part: "...News: 5,000 killed in Ky...want to enlist. Think I shall wait awhile...war fever high...I challenge Bickel to enlist. Took me up. We enlist, sworn in...I bid farewell with all the street crowded to see us leave...get my picture taken...go on picket guard and then sleep on the floor...several hundred sick and wounded arrive...60 prisoners taken away...go out in the grove myself to practice...Gen. Banks moving this way towards us...Rebs retreating from the mountains, our cavalry after them. Brought in several prisoners...Jackson is crossing the Blue Ridge...cannonading heard towards Manassas...Heavy firing down at the railroad. 61st in the fight. Many wounded come in...continual fire kept up all day...hundreds of wounded arriving from the field...take our position at the rifle pits...Jackson after us. I run all night...".
