Description:

Printed colorized Civil War-era valentine, 1p. 4to., entitled: "The Old Maid and Her Pets" showing a gaudily dressed big-nosed woman with a hybrid half-black man/monkey seated on her lap who affectionately strokes her face. The little poem beneath reads, in full: "Since love to men you ne'er would give, But treat them quite cold; Despised you'll be, as long as you live, By young as well as old. You're only fit to sit and chat, To some vile monkey or Tom Cat." Original folds indicate that this valentine was actually sent to some unfortunate recipient. WITH: Printed Civil War-era racist penny song sheet, 1p. 8vo., entitled: "Whack De Row" with illustrated borders of cartoonish Black people characterizations including a black man playing a banjo with a pair of cupid babies flanking a banner with "Ethopian" boldly printed on it. Published by H. de Marsan, NYC, and sold by merchant T. C. Boyd, San Francisco. Lyrics read, in small part: "Good people all, both great and small…if you got a little time to spare…our Union and our Constitution must wave…Whack! row de dow…our Flag we're bound to save. Down South, there's General Beauregard…we'll have no more Bull-Run affairs…for, we've got a brave McClellan now…how are you, General Bowgun?…wat's de matter. Now there's our gallant Sixty-ninth…and our bully boys, the Fire-Zouaves with their little Minnie Rifles…who will show the southern chivalry. No fool is Yankee Doodle Dandy…Whack! row de dow…" WITH: another printed Civil War-era racist penny song sheet, 1p. 8vo., of song by John Allen, entitled: "Sambo, I Have Missed You." Published by Andrews, NYC and sold by merchant T. C. Boyd, San Francisco, ca. 1862, reading, in small part: "Oh, Sambo, it is you…come down to see me now…your voice was like the night owl, siting on the tree…making mussy on my ear, like sticks on a drum. Oh, Sambo, I have missed you, I thought you'd never come…Oh, Sambo, I have loved you, but I fear it is in vain…Oh, Dina, I have wronged you…I have proved unkind…but the day is passed now…tomorrow we will go to church and there become one." Overall minor toning, else very good. Three pieces.
