Description:

CIVIL WAR-DATE MODEL 1855 TYPE II .58 CALIBER BAYONET
Fine relic representing the bloody in-close fighting characteristic of the Civil War, an M1855 Type II socket bayonet for the .58 caliber muskets. The bright finish bayonet measures approximately 18", and features a locking muzzle ring with a mortise slot and a screw/clamp fastener. The bayonet is positively identified as a "Type II"-- put into production on November 18, 1863-- because the mortise and clamp does not line up with the bayonet point; it is 2/10" offset. Federal armorers made this modification in order to gain a stronger lock, after studying the results of the frequent bayonet charges and hand-to-hand combat taking place in battles against the Confederacy. Stamped with "U.S." above the fuller, with a stamped "C" at the muzzle ring's top. Light pitting and marring, but a fine example still maintaining a true point. Lot does NOT include scabbard.
