CIVIL WAR CORRESPONDENCE OF PVT. WILLARD PIERCE, 9TH N.Y. HEAVY ARTY.
Lot of seven war-date letters, 16pp. total, 8vo., written by Pvt. Willard Pierce, Co. C, 9th New York Heavy Artillery, various locations in Va. and Md., 1864-65, mostly to his sisters, Amelia Clapper and Cornelia Westgate in upstate New York. In part: (Baltimore, Sep. 23, 1864) "…we left Elmira Tuesday…I think Maryland will go for Lincoln…(Near Strasburg, Va., Oct. 16, 1864) …It is Sunday in the northern states today but in the army the day is not much observed. There was a small battle here Thursday night. I had the privilege of witnessing it but did not participate. It looked hard to see the wounded men come to the rear with their arms or limbs off. I have been guarding wagon trains between here and Winchester…(Winchester, Va., Oct. 20, 1864) …The Rebs pitched into us yesterday morning about daylight…they gave me a pass to the rear in the shape of a Minnie ball in the right side. It went in about five inches under the arm, pretty well back, coming out soon…I walked for about 15 miles after I was hit. I think that I shall leave for another hospital soon…(Bolivar Heights, Va., Oct. 31, 1864) …We are still in the vicinity of the Ferry but intend to leave tomorrow for the front…(York, Pa., Jan. 8, 1865) …we expect 400 more wounded here in a day or two…(Washington, D. C., Lincoln Hospital, Apr. 14, 1865) …I can get a furlough as soon as the Dr thinks I can stand the journey…(Washington, D. C., May 6, 1865) …a furlough I could not get yet. I shall be apt to get my discharge if Captain Burk will send my descriptive list…am much stronger than when you was here and am gaining flesh…the 6th Corps is to remain at Danville…". Includes four covers and a pre-enlistment letter from 1864. Overall very good.
