CIVIL WAR ARCHIVE OF LIEUTENANT ISAAC D. LANDIS, 9TH PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRY
Large lot of letters, documents, and ephemera related to the Civil War service of Isaac D. Landis, a lieutenant in the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Includes: original albumen photograph, approx. 5" x 7" (sight), a chest-up portrait of Isaac D. Landis in uniform. The image is housed in its original oval frame, with the label on the reverse bearing a vintage inscription recording the date of Landis'' mustering out of the army as July 26, 1865. Shows some toning and light foxing, else very good WITH: Partly-printed D.S., 1p. folio, Nashville, July 27, 1864, a "muster-in roll" for Landis, serving as his officer''s commission to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant of Company "M" of the 9th Pennsylvania cavalry. The roll is signed at the conclusion by colonel (later brevet brigadier general) THOMAS J. JORDAN (1821-1895), commander of the regiment, and countersigned by another lieutenant. Shows folds with minute splits, else very good. WITH: Collection of eight A.L.S.''s, four 8vo. and four 4to., from Landis to his parents and brother, with three dated between Dec. 20, 1861 and Jan. 16, 1862, and three further dated between May 21 and June 27th, 1865, with the remainder undated. The letters contain mostly personal content regarding family news and Landis'' training period upon entering the cavalry, and later his release from service and his and his brother Gideon''s plans for returning home. Four are in pencil, and are very faint in areas, very good overall. WITH: A selection of additional documents and ephemera related to Isaac Landis and family, including election ballots, concert programs, a child''s drawing, greeting cards and more. Not fully checked by us, worthy of further research.
